The Cask of Amontillado Essay In the short story ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠, by Edgar Allen Poe, the author uses many different stylistic elements to convey a certain and eerie sense of tone and theme. ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠, written in 1846, is considered a horror fiction that is based on the mental thoughts and feelings of the author, Poe. The story, based on one manââ¬â¢s obsession with revenge and how he plans on doing it. The main character and narrator, Montresor, a wealthy nobleman or seems to get picked on tremendously by the other character Fortunato. Fortunato, a connoisseur of wine, has a hard time not wanting to drink it all the time. The plot goes on to lure Fortunato into the catacombs and into the shackles where he is put to his doom. Montresor then surrounds his enemy with bricks and watches him die in a long and slow death. The theme is made through many stylistic elements, such as character and Edgar Allen Poeââ¬â¢s background. ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠shows how one manââ¬â¢s revenge is another manââ¬â¢s death. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. A year after his birth, his mother died of an unknown cause which also caused his fatherââ¬â¢s death. He then went to live with the family of John Allan and then went to the University of Virginia until it closed in December 1826. Because of Poeââ¬â¢s debts that he accumulated over the entire school year, he and Allan quarreled and Poe left Richmond a penniless youth. Poeââ¬â¢s early life is relevant to this writing style because this lifestyle is where he got his unlimited images and countless morbid fears about life and death. Without the death of both parents and him being sent away because of debts, the world might never had known the Poe that we know today. In his later years, Poe ended up marrying his cousin and her death cause him much suffering and sorrow that ultimately caused Poeââ¬â¢s unexplainable death in October, 1949. Poe was much more than a writer, he was a critic about his own work a nd the work of others. He invented the detective story and made the reader study the art of conscience in his short stories. Theme played another big part in Poeââ¬â¢s short stories because they conveyed the sense of suspense and fear to the reader and how people get revenge. Theme also plays a big part in a short story and even in a novel. Theme can determine if the plot was good or if the suspense was thrilling enough. Even if a story has no theme, the reader still can enjoy the story for enjoyment and not for interpretive reading. In the story, ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠, the characteristics of both characters make for a gruesome end of the story but a theme no less. In an excerpt by the Salem Press, the author states, ââ¬Å"that Montresor is devoured by the lust of hate, which destroys his soul just as he destroys Fortunatoâ⬠(Press 2). The theme stated here is that one of true hatred can conquer all even if it means death. Poeââ¬â¢s life also played an important part in determining the theme of the story. ââ¬Å"Poe himself seems to have had a morbid fear of premature burialâ⬠, says D. H. Lawrence (Lawrence 1). The characters and Poe himself convey that sense of morbid and horrifying theme common to all of his short stories. Many critics also love the style in which Edgar Allan Poe writes. In the case of ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠, many critics find that the narrative voice in the story fits perfectly the character of the avenger. Without this character, the story would be without its suspense and horror. Critics also agree that the main theme of the story deals with the struggles of conscience and oneself in nature and in society. Critics revere Poeââ¬â¢s use of characters and suspense but quote that he may be a little too excessive with his imagery and poetic quote. One critic, Leonard W. Engel, states that, ââ¬Å"Poe uses a sort of confinement to restrict his characters and their freedomâ⬠(Engel 87). This is in fact true, as Fortunato is restricted by his oppressor and his freedom and then seeks revenge to get the ultimate truth. This is one of the many stylistic devices that makes Poe and his themes a work of beauty. In the short story, ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠, the author uses many literary devices in order to convey and certain theme about the story. He in fact uses his own life and hardships to make the reader understand what kind of life he went through. Poe also uses his characters to convey how their own conscience can lead them to their ultimate doom. This in fact is also what the theme itself consists of. Speeding Up the Germination Process Imagine you are the owner of a greenhouse which produces bedding plants. A customer orders 100 flats of begonia seedlings and wants to pick them up in a month. You begin to panic, as begonia seeds are sometimes slow to germinate and occasionally germinate unevenly. What Is Seed Priming? Your answer may be to obtain primed seeds. Seed priming is used by seed producers and growers to control germination. Mainly, seed priming is used to shorten germination time, which, as in the case of the begonias, is often desirable. The various seed priming processes have been carefully designed to allow for some of the early germination processes to take place, but not for the completion of full germination. Therefore, a grower can plant primed seed which has much of the germination process completed and expect early emergence. The process can also allow for more uniform, even germination of the treated seeds. It can also increase germination over a wider temperature range, and reduce disease incidence in seeds. In some plant species, priming is necessary, rather than merely desirable, in order to overcome seed dormancy. How Does Seed Priming Work? Seed priming allows for the regulation of the water content in the seed, either by soaking the seeds in water or in a solute; or, by exposing the seeds to water vapor. The seeds imbibe water for a predetermined time interval. After the time interval, the process is halted right before the first root, called the radicle, emerges from the seed. A high amount of water is needed for radicle emergence, so the priming process is ceased to prevent full germination from occurring. The primed seeds can then be dried and sown when ready. You may be wondering why the seed doesnt dry out during the priming process and become unable to germinate. If the process is properly controlled, the hydration treatment is stopped before the desiccation tolerance is lost. There is a limit for each plant species as to when the line between priming and pre-germination is crossed. Safe limits have been calculated as to the maximum length of time for which seeds can be primed. If the maximum length is exceeded, it can lead to seedling damage. Seed Priming Methods There are four common methods utilized for priming seeds: hydropriming, osmotic priming, solid matrix priming, and drum priming. Other methods are proprietary, which means they are trade secrets or patented, so someone would have to pay to use those methods! Hydropriming- Hydropriming is the simple soaking of seeds in water, although aerated distilled water is preferred. This process is especially useful in economically disadvantaged, arid crop growing areas.Osmotic priming- Osmotic priming, also called osmopriming or osmoconditioning, is the soaking of seeds in solutions containing chemicals such as mannitol, potassium nitrate (KNO3), potassium chloride (KCl), polyethylene glycol (PEG), or sodium chloride (NaCl). Plant hormones, which control or affect various stages of seed germination, or beneficial microorganisms (which help control fungal and bacterial disease) can be added to the osmopriming solutions.Solid matrix priming- Solid matrix priming involves the incubation of seeds in a solid, insoluble matrix, such as vermiculite, diatomaceous earth, or another highly water-absorbent polymer, with a limited amount of water, allowing for slow imbibition.Drum priming- Seeds are hydrated by placing them in a rotating drum into which a cont rolled level of water vapor is released. Who Benefits From Seed Priming? Seed priming is most often used for high-value crop seeds, but the steeping process of hydropriming has been used in arid countries to help overcome soil deficiencies and improve crop production. The disadvantages to seed priming include the fact that primed seeds are difficult to store in some cases, as they need cool storage temperatures- not to mention the fact that the process is a sometimes time-consuming extra bit of effort. However, in most cases, seed can be primed overnight, surface-dried, and sown the very next day. In cases such as the one involving begonias, outlined at the beginning of this article, seed priming can be a necessary and even simple part of growing plants.

In my opinion, this is the best proposal of the two not only because the cost is based on the work done but also because it would be cheaper than the first proposal in the long run. This option is also better for negotiating on the side of Smith since the cost per hour can be negotiated lower than is stated by Ingborg. Although it would be difficult to ascertain the exact hours worked by Ingborg, Smith has more leverage in this proposal than the previous one. Are there any other choices open to Smith for arriving at an equitable agreement? Smith can research on the market charges by the other firms and use the average as a basis for negotiating. The market prices for the three other sources could be essential to coming to an agreement. Even though the three other companies were not in a position to handle the order due to time constraints, Smith can still get the cost they would charge on making the RF transmitter and use the average during the negotiation with Ingborg. By so doing, Ingborg would realize that Smith has knowledge on the on goings in the market thus giving Smith a bit of leverage during negotiations. Another option available to Smith is giving a counter proposal that is based on the cost of producing the RF transmitter that Campbell Keyboard has incurred in the past. Campbell Keyboard also produces RF transmitters but due to the time limitations in place for this new order, it is difficult to manufacture hence the need to outsource the product. Therefore, in order to come to an equitable agreement, Smith can use the cost of manufacturing the RF transmitter that Campbell Keyboard has incurred in the past and use it as a basis for negotiating with Ingborg. Immunocompromised Infection with Behà §et Disease Abstract Behà §et disease is a relapsing multiorgan inflammatory disorder characterised by mucocutaneous, opthalmic, neurological, vascular and gastrointestinal involvement. We report an intriging case with rare manifestations of myositis and myocarditis, and the first reported occurrence of an immunocompromised-associated infection (polymicrobial necrotising fasciitis) without immunosuppresive therapy use in this presumably hyperimmune disorder. Lessons from practice: 1. Behà §et Disease is a rare autoimmune condition with significant geographical variation in its distribution and is most prevalent in people of Turkish background. 2. Behà §et disease is a systemic disease with predominant symptoms of oral ulcerations, genital ulcerations and uveitis. Other systemic involvement include neurological, gastrointestination, rheumatic, dermatological manifestation. Less common but well described manifestation include muscle and cardiac involvement. 3. The unexplained manifestation of Type 1 necrotising fascitis in this patient suggests that immune dysregulation in Behà §et disease could contribute to primary immunosuppression. It is important to maintain high viligance for risk of infection in Behà §et disease. Clinical Record A 40-year-old woman presented to hospital for investigation of progressive malaise, anorexia and generalised proximal myalgia over 6 days with an elevated serum creatine kinase [CK] of 3550 U/L (reference range [RR] < 145). She is of Spanish and Turkish ethnic background. Her medical history included transfusion-related Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection, lower limb deep vein thrombosis with Factor V Leiden mutation and depression. She denied any infective symptoms, recent trauma or stenuous exercise, rash or athralgias. Physical examation was unremarkable except for proximal generalised myalgia without weakness. Laboratory investigations initially revealed a normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein (CRP). Over the next 72 hours, she developed an acute bilateral polyathropathy of the wrist and metacarpalphalangeal joints. Multiple cutaneous manifestations were observed including (1) a rapidly evolving erythema nodosum-like rash over the legs which later progressed into a purpuric non-blanching rash with fluctuant subcutaneous oedema, (2) multiple oral aptheous ulcers and (3) perioral acneiform papular nodules. Further laboratory studies showed mildy raised inflammatory markers and a normalising CK of 428 U/L. The results of investigations for differential diagnoses were unremarkable. (Table 1) Multiple skin biopsies showed a neutrophilic-dermatosis like reaction. On day 6, she developed a mildly tender natal cleft excoriation which progressively became pustular over 2 days with a dramatic increase in CRP >380mg/L and worsening renal function. She remained systemically well. A wound swab grew methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus. Oral flucloxacillin and metronidazole were commenced. MRI showed enhanced T2 signals in the presacral fascia correlating to the sacral wound. A biopsy of the natal cleft wound showed similar findings to previous skin biopsies. Simultaneously, a pathergy-like reaction was noted with previous intravenous-cannula and biopsy sites becoming pustular. At this point, further clinical history revealed a 5 year history of recurrent oral and gential ulcerations up to 4 episodes a year. A clinical diagnosis of Behà §et disease was made. Subsequent HLA-B51 testing and ophthalmological examination were unremarkable. On day 10, she deteriorated acutely becoming hypotensive and hypoxic. Computer tomography (CT) pulmonary angiography revealed bilateral pneumonia. Serum white cell count and CK increased substantially from 11.0 x109/L to 37.2 x109/L (RR 4.0 ââ¬â 11.0) and 233 U/L to 3715 U/L respectively in 4 days. She was intubated, commenced on broad-spectrum antibiotics with systemic glucocoticoid and inotropic support. A further CT of the pelvis revealed numerous sacral subcutaneous gas locules and fluid. Multiple debridement procedures achieved drainage of large amount of pus and excision of the necrotic tissue. Sacral necrotising myofasciits was confirmed on a frozen section specimen showing extensive necrosis within subcutis, fascia and skeletal muscle with numerous mixed bacteria. Designing A Multimodal Composition About My Writing Essay
For project three, the objective was to create a multimodal composition about my writing process. Throughout the poster, I talked about how my writing has changed as well as how it has stayed the same since I began English 101. I also spoke on the struggles I went through with writing in high school. Through my poster, I was able to convey how a deeper understanding of the writing process in high school can help mediate these struggles and better prepare one for their intro Writing class in college. Bases have a pH greater than 7 and can accept a proton or produce an OH- ion in a reaction. If you mix equal amounts of a strong acid and a strong base, the two chemicals essentially cancel each other out and produce a salt and water. Mixing equal amounts of a strong acid with a strong base also produces a neutral pH (pH 7) solution.à This is called a neutralization reaction and looks like this: HA BOH ââ â BA H2O heat An example would be the reaction between the strong acid HCl (hydrochloric acid) with the strong base NaOH (sodium hydroxide): HCl NaOHà ââ â NaCl H2O heat The salt that is produced is table salt or sodium chloride. Now, if you had more acid than base in this reaction, not all of the acid would react, so the result would be salt, water, and leftover acid, so the solution would still be acidic (pH 7 ). If you had more base than acid, there would be leftover base and the final solution would be basic (pH 7). A similar outcome occurs when one or both of the reactants are weak. A weak acid or weak base doesnt fully break apart (dissociate) in water, so there may be leftover reactants at the end of the reaction, influencing the pH. Also, water may not be formed because most weak bases are not hydroxides (no OH- available to form water). Gases and Salts Sometimes gases are produced. For example, when you mix baking soda (a weak base) with vinegar (a weak acid), you get carbon dioxide. Other gases are flammable, depending on the reactants, and sometimes these gases are flammable, so you should use care when mixing acids and bases, especially if their identity is unknown. Some salts remain in solution as ions. For example, in water, the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide really looks like a bunch of ions in aqueous solution: H(aq) Cl-(aq) Na(aq) OH-(aq) ââ â Na(aq) Cl-(aq) H2O Other salts are not soluble in water, so they form a solid precipitant.
